Hao Huynh, 22, was slain about 2:35 a.m. as he returned to the Catalina Village Apartments, 3560 Dixie Drive, where he lived with his girlfriend, police said.

Huynh had been at a sorority party in Bellaire with his girlfriend, police were told.

At the party, one of the girlfriend’s friends received a gift bag containing two pillows and a white hooded sweatshirt with the sorority’s logo on them.

Confronted at car

The couple, who went to the party in separate cars, agreed to hold the gift bag for the friend until later, investigators said.

Huynh put the gift bag in his car. When he got to his south Houston home, an armed man confronted him, apparently as he took the gift bag and his backpack from the trunk.

“We don’t believe the suspect followed him there, because according to the witnesses the suspect fled on foot and went through the walk-through gate of the apartments,” Houston police officerRick Bolton said Tuesday.

After shooting Huynh in the chest and abdomen, the gunman fled in a white Chevrolet Malibu or Impala, Bolton said. He was last seen running away with the two bags.

Moments after the shooting, a surveillance camera at a nearby fast-food restaurant captured an image of the vehicle as it passed by. The car can be seen in the distance, but not close enough to make out the driver’s face.
